What is Photogram?
A photogram is an image produced without a camera by placing an object on photosensitive paper. The picture is usually abstract, produced on a photographic material without the use of a camera, by placing an object on the material and exposing light.

Man Ray
Man Ray was a visual artist from Pennyslyvania, USA. He used to be an abstract painter as well as an photogram maker who moved to Paris to expand his interest in photography. On the left, there is a collection of some of the photograms that Man Ray has made. The first photogram on the left is very cluttered and unorganised. All of the objects are quite close together and some of the images are quite faint in colour. Nevertheless, all the images are very defined as you can see every object in detail. |
My Photogram Experiment
On Thursday, the whole class went in the dark room to create Photograms. We were asked to bring some items to put on the enlargers. As we got in the darkroom, we had to put the lights off because of the photographic paper so it does not get exposed to a bright light, If it is then it will be ruined and you would have to start again. We switched the red lights on as it won't necessarily harm the photographic material. We put our items on top of the photographic paper under the enlarger and set the apuncture to 4.5 and got ready to expose it to light for 5 seconds. After my photogram was ready, I put in the developer for two minutes. Then I put it in the stop for a minute and then the fix for two minutes with the tongs as the chemical can be harmful towards your skin, but the chemicals were used to reveal the image of the chosen objects. After I got it out with tongs as it was wet so then it was hung up and we waited for it to dry. As we got familiar with the photograms and how to make them, we started making bigger and better photograms. We used the same methods as the practise photograms but with bigger photographic material.

My First Photogram Experiment.
I really like the look at my photogram as it looks different and I like the creative composition as the objects are placed in an unorganised way. I should expose my photogram a little longer to give the cassette tape some more depth in colour. Apart from that, I really like it but it could be slightly improved by re-arraging the order of the objects and expose my photogram for longer.
